What is shiftED?

The COVID-19 pandemic caused several shifts in education.  Project shiftED aims to set a rigorous baseline of tech proficiency in California’s schools by transforming site teams into ambassadors of digital literacy and technology integration across the state.  Through research-based approaches to professional learning, site teams in shiftED develop a roadmap to use at their schools/districts to train additional educators in the use of technology as a lever to construct learning environments that are active, collaborative, constructive, authentic and goal-directed.

Site teams from diverse areas meet regularly through a Community of Practice (COP) to align resources, provide professional learning and to identify common challenges. The culmination of shiftED includes an exhibition of all participants presenting to educators in a statewide forum. shiftED will be led by the Educational Leaders from the Tech+ Division at the Santa Cruz County Office of Education.

How do I get started with Digital Literacy?

Getting started with a systems-approach to digital literacy is easier than you might think.  We recommend the following approach, also outlined in our printable one-pager.

Step One: FORM A TEAM

Do you have an Instructional Technology Committee? This could be your team that focuses on building a plan around implementing digital literacy. If you do not have a team, consider selecting staff who have already begun infusing technology in their work as well as staff who have a passion for reform. Not everyone needs to be technology masters!

Step Two: CREATE YOUR VISION

It's essential to articulate why digital literacy is important to you, how you define it, and what your vision is for implementation as a team. This vision will become your North Star and will be prominently displayed on your Digital Portfolio. See shiftED participants' vision statements: https://sccoe.link/shiftedvision .

Step Three: EVALUATE CURRENT NEEDS

Where are you succeeding with digital literacy and where do you have room to grow? This will help chart your path forward with our Digital Literacy Assessment Tool guiding the conversation. This exercise assists your team in identifying your strengths and challenges within each competency: Mindsets, Self-Development, Safety, and Participation. We also recommend collecting qualitative data through empathy interviews of various partners. You can preview our Assessment Tool (https://sccoe.link/dlassess) and see an example report here: https://sccoe.link/dlrep

Step Four: BUILD A ROADMAP

Once you have identified your current needs and created your vision, you will need a plan for how to get there. Using our Digital Literacy Roadmap Tool, you can select from crowd-sourced action items that are contributed by other schools and districts. This roadmap should include SMART Goals and metrics toward equity, instruction, and professional learning programs. Preview our Digital Literacy Roadmap Tool: https://digitalroadmap.santacruzcoe.org

Step Five : CURATE & OBSERVE

Once you've created your Digital Literacy Roadmap, the implementation begins! Pay attention to your site so that you can collect bright spots with exemplars of digital literacy in action. Continue to build curricular resources, engage with partners (i.e. Common Sense Media), and provide ongoing professional learning including planning time to create implementation steps within existing curricular scope and sequences.

Step Six: CELEBRATE & ITERATE

As your site continues with digital literacy implementation it's important to celebrate successes and iterate as needed. Showcase the successes on your website, newsletters, and social media channels! Be sure to tag #shiftEDCA.
